introduced by Ivor Cutler, designed by Ruth Holden
So what is it that makes us consider someone as ‘eccentric’?
There are people who defy our conventions, in their interests, their lifestyle or their personality. Individuals? Certainly. Eccentrics? Perhaps. But, of course, it’s a matter of opinion. After all when does individuality become eccentricity?
A 1995 medical study determined that there were fifteen defining characteristics of eccentrics the most important of which were that the person was non-conforming, creative, strongly motivated by curiosity, idealistic and happily obssessed with something. It doesn’t sound too bad does it almost an ideal to aim for!
Alan Grainger introduces us to a host of true individuals, including Tom the Leopard Man; Lydia the Vampire; Ron the angel man; Clint Eastwood who is Clint Eastwood; King Arthur, who is, yes you guessed!; Captain Halliwell the reincarnated 17th century Roundhead; Crazy Buffalo who lives in his wigwam in his back garden; John the cave dweller; Anne whose life changed when she first saw a garden gnome. Non-conforming, creative, strongly motivated, and happily obsessed they certainly are. Individuals? Without a doubt ! Eccentrics? That’s for you to decide!
Introduced by Ivor Cutler well-known ‘individual’, poet, writer, artist, and musician i am combines subtle and sensitive design by Ruth Holden with the clear eye of photographer Alan Grainger to create a wonderfully uplifting and joyous book.
